Christmas Traditions in Britain

Christmas Eve is on 24 December. In the evening, many families sing carols or watch a Christmas film together. Children hang stockings by the fireplace. They hope that Father Christmas fills the stockings with small gifts and sweets at night.

Christmas Day is on 25 December. The whole family has a big dinner together. They eat turkey and Christmas pudding. A Christmas pudding is a dark, round cake – it is not ice cream or a pancake. After dinner, everyone opens more presents, and people pull Christmas crackers with a loud bang. Inside a cracker, there is a small gift, a paper hat and a joke.

26 December is Boxing Day. In the past, rich families put gifts in boxes for poor people on this day. Today, Boxing Day is also a popular day for sport and shopping – but nobody fights or boxes on Boxing Day!
